Background

The San Francisco Sea Lions were members of the West Coast Negro Baseball Association (WCNBA) in 1946, that circuits only season. The league was formed on October 18, 1945 by two Berkeley, CA firefighters, Edward Harris and David Portlock. They hoped to bring top-level Negro baseball to the West Coast.

San Francisco was officially awarded a franchise in January along with Oakland, Portland, and Seattle. Los Angeles and San Diego joined a few weeks later.
